‘Keep Winnipesaukee Clean – Put a Sock in It!’ If you don’t use a bilge sock or pad in your boat, please purchase one at your local marina. It is an inexpensive way to keep excess oil and gas from contaminating the lake. We greatly appreciate and recognize the following marinas who have agreed to add an option in their customer service agreements for boat owners to include the installation of bilge socks as a routine maintenance action in their boats. These marinas will install a sock or pad at the beginning of the boating season and remove and dispose of it at the end of the season.- Irwin Marine

Phosphorus Free Retailers
We recognize and appreciate the following retailers for participating in our phosphate free fertilizer campaign. While phosphorus may be beneficial for plant growth, it is harmful to our lakes and streams. Just as it fertilizes plants and lawns, it also fertilizes the lake, promoting algal, plant, and cyanobacteria growth. Town of Alton:
- 2019: Completed the Merrymeeting River and Lake Watershed Management Plan
City of Laconia:
- 2010: Completed the watershed management plan for Paugus Bay
- 2022: Beginning of the Langley Brook, Paugus Bay drainage analysis and hydrologic assessment to identify erosion and sedimentation sources to Langley Cove
- 2022: Initiating cyanobacteria monitoring program to help track and document the potential of algal and cyanobacteria blooms
Town of Meredith:
- 2010: Completed the watershed management plan for Meredith Bay
- 2017: Installation of a rain garden at the Waukewan Bath House
- 2021: Installation of two bio-retention drainage areas at Winnipesaukee Beach Colony Club
- 2022: Continuing implementation of restoration projects identified in the watershed management plan
Town of Moultonborough:
- 2017: Completed the watershed restoration plan for Moultonborough Bay Inlet
- 2020: Completed the watershed management plan for Moultonborough Bay and Winter Harbor
- 2022: Construction at 3 of the top 10 sites identified in the Moultonborough Bay and Winter Harbor Watershed Management Plan
- 2022: Stormwater improvements to mitigate polluted runoff at States Landing, including two rain gardens
Town of Tuftonboro:
- 2020: Completed the watershed management plan for Moultonborough Bay and Winter Harbor
- 2022: Melvin River Stream and Habitat Assessment to identify specific actions for reducing nutrient and sediment loading to Melvin Bay
Town of Wolfeboro:
- 2018: Wolfeboro Waters was created as concerns heightened over the water quality of the lakes and ponds in Wolfeboro and surrounding areas
- 2020: Assisted in the completion of the watershed management plan for Moultonborough Bay and Winter Harbor
- 2021: Fundraised to develop a watershed management plan for Wolfeboro Bay
- 2022: Continued the development process for the watershed management plan
- 2022: Implement best management practices (BMPs) to reduce sediment and nutrient loading to Winter Harbor
State Government
LWA's Role
LWA works with all of the communities in the Winnipesaukee watershed to educate and promote best practices for reducing pollutants from reaching our lake, and to provide technical assistance to identify, quantify, and mitigate these pollution sources.
We have collaborated with multiple towns around the lake to:
- Complete watershed management plans and implement the projects identified in these plans.
- Implement our Be Winni Blue & LakeSmart program.
- Assist in water quality monitoring.
- Present several educational programs on various topics such as; proper septic system care and maintenance, gravel road best management practices, landscaping by the waters edge, water quality and cyanobacteria.
In 2022, we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with local governments, businesses and other organizations around the big lake.
